What Should Patients Know About Migraine Medicine?

Migraine medications fall into two main categories: preventive treatments taken regularly and acute treatments used during attacks

Migraine is a complex neurological condition that affects millions of people worldwide, and understanding your treatment options is crucial for effective management. Modern migraine medicines work through different mechanisms to either prevent attacks before they start or treat them once they occur. The landscape of migraine treatment has evolved significantly, offering patients more targeted and effective options than ever before.

Preventive medications are designed to reduce the frequency and severity of migraine attacks when taken regularly. These include CGRP inhibitors like Aimovig, Ajovy, Emgality, and Vyepti, which block a protein involved in migraine pain pathways. For patients with chronic migraine, Botox injections administered by healthcare providers every 12 weeks have shown effectiveness in reducing monthly headache days. Oral preventive options like Qulipta provide daily prevention through CGRP receptor antagonism.

Acute treatment medications are taken during a migraine attack to stop or reduce symptoms. CGRP receptor antagonists such as Ubrelvy, Nurtec ODT, Reyvow, and Zavzpret offer targeted relief by blocking CGRP activity during an attack. These newer options provide alternatives to traditional treatments and may work when other medications haven't been effective. Some medications, like Nurtec ODT, can be used both for acute treatment and prevention.

Working with your healthcare provider is essential to develop a personalized migraine management plan. This includes discussing your attack frequency, severity, triggers, and any other medical conditions or medications. Your doctor can help determine whether you need preventive treatment, acute treatment, or both, and can adjust your plan based on your response to different medications. Keep a migraine diary to track patterns and treatment effectiveness, as this information helps optimize your care.

Understanding potential side effects and proper medication use is important for safe and effective treatment. Each medication class has different side effect profiles, and your healthcare provider will consider these when recommending treatment. Never exceed recommended dosages, especially for acute medications, as overuse can lead to medication overuse headaches. Always inform your healthcare team about all medications and supplements you're taking to avoid potential interactions.
